Het coronavirus blijft bij iedereen vragen oproepen. Ook over onze huisdieren. We zetten hier nuttige (wetenschappelijke) informatie op een rijtje. Het belangrijkst: er is op dit moment geen bewijs dat het coronavirus COVID-19 gevaarlijk is voor huisdieren. Of dat zij het kunnen verspreiden.

Corona bij dieren

In de wereld zijn heel veel verschillende soorten coronavirussen. COVID-19 is een nieuw coronavirus. Overdraagbaar van mens op mens. Honden en katten (en veel andere dieren) hebben ieder een ‘eigen’ coronavirus. Deze geven meestal klachten van de darmen. Els Broens is Veterinair microbioloog bij de Universiteit Utrecht en de Koninklijke Nederlandse Maatschappij voor Diergeneeskunde. Zij vertelt hierover op Radio 1.

Kat in België

Er gaan berichten rond over een geïnfecteerde kat in België. De Faculteit van Diergeneeskunde zegt hierover het volgende:

“In België is op 27 maart bekend geworden dat een COVID-19 positieve patiënte haar kat heeft besmet met het nieuwe coronavirus. De kat vertoonde klinische symptomen (diarree, braken en hoesten) en testte positief op het virus in braaksel en faeces. Het is niet 100% zeker dat deze ziekteverschijnselen bij de kat veroorzaakt werden door het coronavirus of door een andere oorzaak. De kat is inmiddels beter. In Nederland zijn er geen gevallen bekend van (huis)dieren met het coronavirus.”

Advies RIVM

Bent u zelf ziek, verkouden of heeft u corona? Dan is het advies van het RIVM wel om zo min mogelijk contact met huisdier(en) te hebben. Laat als het kan iemand anders voor uw dier  zorgen. Als dit niet kan, was dan goed uw handen na contact met uw dier. Laat uw hond of kat u niet likken. Dit zijn algemene voorzorgsmaatregelen.

The coronavirus continues to raise questions for everyone. Also about our pets. We have listed useful (scientific) information here. Most importantly: there is currently no evidence that the coronavirus COVID-19 is dangerous to pets. Or that they can spread it.

Corona in animals

There are many different types of coronaviruses in the world. COVID-19 is a new coronavirus. Transferable from person to person. Dogs and cats (and many other animals) each have their ‘own’ coronavirus. These usually cause complaints of the intestines. Els Broens is a Veterinary microbiologist at Utrecht University and the Royal Dutch Society for Veterinary Medicine. She tells about this on Radio 1 (in Dutch).

Cat in Belgium

News articles are circulating about an infected cat in Belgium. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Utrecht says the following about this:

“In Belgium, it was announced on March 27 that a COVID-19 positive patient infected her cat with the new coronavirus. The cat showed clinical symptoms (diarrhea, vomiting, and coughing) and tested positive for the virus in vomit and feces. It is not 100% sure that these symptoms were caused by the coronavirus or have some other cause. The cat is now better. In the Netherlands, there are no known cases of (pets) with the coronavirus. “

Advice RIVM

Are you sick, do you have a cold or do you have corona? Then RIVM advises having as little contact with pet (s) as possible. If possible, have someone else take care of your animal. If this is not possible, wash your hands thoroughly after contact with your animal. Don’t let your dog or cat lick you. These are general precautions.
